Lodge Bay, Labrador is on the Trans Labrador Highway 80 km north-east of Red Bay. It’s only another 9 km to Mary’s Harbour. Lodge Bay is at the mouth of the St. Charles River. You cross the river driving past the town.
The highway (Route 510) is gravel from Red Bay. Driving conditions are variable. We traveled the road in June and found it was much better than the paved road between Blanc Sablon and Red Bay. It’s been recently announced that this section of the highway is the next to be paved.
We decided to stop in Lodge Bay to pick up a snack. We discovered Mona’s Place, which is an amazing store for the size of the community. If they don’t have it, you don’t need it.
We found out that Mona’s is referred to as Labrador’s Walmart. People drive all the way from Red Bay to shop at Mona’s. Linda was able to pick up some linen for her rug hooking hobby. We’d been looking for it in much larger communities.
In addition to a huge selection of dry goods, Mona’s is a fully stocked grocery store.
